The groves on the hills

The Kotsonis Estate lies at the borders of the Prefecture of Argolida with the Prefecture of Arcadia in Peloponnese. It extends to an area of approximately 100 hectares, while the production capacity is further supported with the cooperation of local smaller producers. The clay earth in these areas is considered as the most appropriate for the cultivation of olive trees. The underground waters of the Estate together with the 500m altitude of the surrounding hills create an environment friendly to the olive tree!

The Kotsonis Estate mainly produces Manaki, a local variety characterised by its fruitiness. Another variety, Koroneiki, which emits the aroma of green olive leaves is also produced in a smaller scale, mainly by cooperating cultivators. Both varieties are internationally accredited for their exquisite quality and superb taste. The Estate employs the most contemporary methods of olive oil production and standardization. The groves, dedicated to producing Extra Virgin Olive Oil, follow a low density cultivation method. The process of cold extraction is employed in the olive oil-press, in order to preserve the vitamins contained and ensure the best product quality. The olive orchards that exclusively produce Organic -Extra Virgin Olive Oil, are of a Single Estate, a method that ensures 100% control over the production process and Monovarietal, which ensures the stability of quality and taste. Monovarietal-Manaki variety olive oil fully attributes the flavor and aroma of the producing tree, as well as the characteristics of local soil and climate.

The Kotsonis Family History

4 generations dedicated to the production of olive oil

The Kotsonis Family History
The Kotsonis Family History

In a landscape where rolling hills meet the horizon in a verdant land of olive trees, the Kotsonis family 100 years ago envisioned the future colored in… olive green.

In the area once ruled by ancient Mycenae and famous Argos, 4 generations of the Kotsonis Estate make their own history: a history inspired by their own land.

The Kotsonis Estate groves started their course in the beginning of 1900 and soon the taste of the Estate olive oil became famous among consumers. 20 years later, the Kotsonis family, following advances in technology, built the first water driven mechanical olive oil press in the area which was considered as the most advanced of its era. This decision, as a result of the family’s love for the quality of their products, gave a new boost in the production and a brand name to the Estate. The family’s devotion to tradition and quality and their persistence in following technological advances, was once again confirmed in 1930, when the Kotsonis family decided to upgrade the olive oil press into hydroelectric. In the following decades the Estate was dedicated to the production of qualitative olive oil, gaining more and more fans for its exquisite taste.

In 2007, the Kotsonis Estate advanced once more, granting part of the oil groves to the production of organic farming, predicting the consumer trend for healthier products. Today, the Kotsonis family uses the most advanced methods of extraction and standardization in new facilities, insisting for 4 generations on doing what they know best: offer the land the care it deserves and get the best out of it.

Mycenae, Peloponnese

An area with a history of 5.000 years in olive oil!

The cities of Mycenae and Argos, place of origin of the most important royal family of Ancient Greece, the Atreid dynasty, were famous during ancient times not only for the wealth of the area in gold but also for their civilization. A civilization which in antiquity meant engagement not only with the arts and literature but also with the land. The land they were learning how to exploit, to plough, to grow, to live with it and live through it.

The clay tablets of Linear B syllabic script that were discovered in Mycenae and Pylos, provide evidence of an economy based on the trade of olive derived goods such as olive oil and olives among the most important. What is extremely interesting is that these ancient civilizations utilized three different symbols to depict the words olive, olive tree and olive oil underlining the importance of these words in their language.

Today, the Peloponnesians continue their passionate affair with olive oil which started 5000 years ago. This is the heritage the Kotsonis Estate embraced. A vivid, evergreen, heritage met wherever you cast your glance.
